my first rosette cedar face plain blackwood rosette w/- ebony/maple/ebony purfling the guitar also has a blackwood end graft. it looks a similar colour with my halogen lights but in real life the blackwood is a few shades darker than the face... I used the popsicle stick method....which went well except .I did a few dry runs but when i applied glue i had a hard time getting the outside purfling into the channel and crushed the wall in a few spots...nothing real noticeable and luckily it is where a scratchplate will go if i decide to put one on... overall I'm happy with the outcome, quite plain, nothing fancy which is what I'm going for with this guitar. thanks for looking,Grant http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q163/ignatius_01/ros0000. jpg |

thanks everyone. Robert, the back and sides are EIR and I'm going to bind it with some highly flamed rock maple w/- the same purfling as the rosette. theres a thread floating around with the body minus the top somewhere.. cheers |

Grant, you used a popsicle stick for that?! The kind where you drive the x-acto knife blade through the stick at just the right spot? I'm impressed! Very nice job, mate. Steve |

Steve[/QUOTE] yes....the cheap method but works surprisingly well..I guess it helps with cedar being so soft.... It was a slow process excavating the channel .. but I just set the depth of the blade to around 1.4mm and cut lots of circles about 2mm apart inside the channel so i had a guide for the depth |

The rosette looks great! So after you cut the series of circles that would fall inside the rosette, you excavated the channel with what, chisels? If you want to do this by hand, you can use a router plane suce as the Stanley #271, they are very handy for this type of thing and are surprisingly fast and accurate. I believe the English name for the wooden version of this tool is "old woman's tooth" (!), it should not be too hard to make in your shop if you can find pictures of one. |

yes ..i have seen those router planes and they would be great for that task....but unfortunately i don't have one. I just used a 1/4" chisel.. |
