Ryan's Kerfed Linings

A Ryan guitar, is tops on my short list of guitars to own, followed closely by an Omega, made by our own Kevin Gallagher. Those two guys just, for some reason, epitomize perfection in building for me. This kerfing is cool, no?

I knew he was going to finally invent something completely new with that laser cutter. He was doing cool stuff with it just a couple weeks after he got it. Now I'm jealous, he's doing something I can't do with the Fadal :)

That is some cool stuff.  How do he do that?  Flexible in every direction.  Very intriguing.

Didn't Bruce Dickey come up with a similar design a while back? I tried searching the archives but Bruce just posts so much....

Great idea and a great look - I'm going to guess, based on the quality (and price) of the guitars on his site, that these lining won't be available to hobby builders like me?

Man, I need to figure out how to do something like that. Linings have been a pain for me so far since standard ones don't flex in the other direction. Maybe we need to develop Bruce's bi-flex idea some more.

Kevin told me he may make these available....
Thant would be nice!

Kevin's new linings are amazing.
I got to see some of it at the ASIA symposium.
It is a brilliant idea.
An elegant solution to an irritating problem.

You don't absolutely "need" a laser cutter to make them. It can be done with a simple hand saw but it would be really, really tedious to do so.

I hope he does make them available to everyone. he said he might.

Kevin passed a piece of his lining around the room during his excellent presentation. It was about 6 inches long when he passed it out but it was only about 4 inches long when he got it back. I think a few people took a little sample. I swear it wasn't me...

I should clarify that, I suppose. I could make them on the Fadal, but the fixturing required to make them efficiently would need a lot of sales to justify (besides that it's Kevin's idea).

It sounds very intriguing, but the pictures on his website don't show enough detail for me to see what he's doing. Can anyone describe what he has done here?

I'm a big fan of Kevin Ryan. He's contributed more to the development of how guitars are built than nearly anyone else in a long time (other than Bob Taylor).

Ok, I don't get what the big deal is. I have no trouble with standard kerfed linings. These won't make your guitar sound better, or even look better unless someone is staring at the inside. I can get kerfed linings for 2 to 3 dollars.
How much more would you pay for these?
I agree that they look cool.

Putting on flame proof suite now.

Bruce Dickey did indeed come up with a similar lining some time ago, and some folks thought it was a bad idea. I for one liked it. It was a good idea then, and it still is.

They look to me, to make for easy installation!

I like ‘em!
