i was asked by a customer to make a carbon fibre nut for his bass, which i did under protest and it seems to be fine...actually sounds ok! i was wondering if any of you had ever heard of it being used as nut material before? i never have, and cant find any reference to it ever being used by anyone really. the reason i havent heard of carbon fibre being used might be the same reason i've never heard of cheese being used...if you get what i mean it feels too soft to be much use to me any help / opinions much appreciated! cheers steve |

I used it on a mando once and it worked just fine. We are very much creatures of tradition and that is why you don't see it much. If it works, use it. |

So if you make a nut out of cheese and are cutting it to shape, technically aren't you cutting the cheese? |

thanks, i think i just need reassurance! by the way John, are you the John How of Rotosound string fame? and yes, i would be cutting the cheese, 4 times, once for each slot. (simultaneously i would be actually cutting the nut which was co-incidently made of cheese) |

Seems to me they were pretty commonplace on electrics some years ago. I know my son used them on a couple of his Floyd Rose Strats, and replaced the tuners with locking tuners. It improved his ability to stay in tune, and he liked the sound when bending strings, as it lengthened the stretch. |

Probably, the main reason it's not used much is, it's not fun to work with. |
