Dave is off to Wales on Wednesday to visit family and friends and this OM is going with him as a surprise gift for for one his mates who taught him how to play guitar when he was a little tacker.

It's also the reason I haven't got the recordings done of the other two OM's as we've been battling to get this one ready to go.

Specs

Back and sides - Ovangkol
Top - Sitka Spruce - Parabolic braces
Neck - Mahogany/Maple/Blackwood
Bindings - Ivoroid
Pickup - K & K mini Western
Body Finish - Ubeaut Hard Shellac
Neck Finish - Briwax

It's a nice, simply adorned and sweet sounding instrument.
The top is quite thin - 2.2mm/.086" but we've been tending that way on the OM's.

Ovangkol is a delightful wood to work with but it stinks.

Wow, that Ovangkol is lovely. I have a set at home for build #4

I am very glad you have expressed distaste at the odor of this particular hardwood. I was stunned when I opened my package from Madinter, as all the other wood I have worked with smells heavenly by comparison.

Does it...um...smell something underfoot that's sat in a barn for a few years? (Well I thought that a Spanish dog had christened the wood prior to shipping... )

I have a set of Ovangkol too... but i've never work with this wood...

is ovangkol an oily wood?

do you joint the stinky with CA? or you use naphta on wood?

Beautiful wood and a gorgeous guitar.  I hadn't heard Ovangkol was stinky though, so as much as I like the look, I think I will remove it from my wish list of tonewoods. 

Great story too - I plan to surprise my uncle with one of my guitars as a thanks for introducing me guitar in 1988!  I hope mine turns out as nice...

Yes Sam it's definitely got the poo thing going on.

Dave is from the Valleys. I'm not sure of which village but I'll find out and let you know.

Seriously, it is a very nice wood, similar in working properties and feel to Australian Blackwood and the smell is only strong when you are cutting or sanding.

It is also inexpensive so I wouldn't be put off from using it because of a few brief malodorous moments.

Bolix - it's not oily, no need for naptha and it was jointed with Titebond.

That's a beauty, Bob! Tasteful appointments, fine craftsmanship, and a really pretty shimmer on both the top and back. 2.2mm, huh? That's definitely in classical soundboard territory. You must be using petrified bracing!    I've forgotten, do you spray or pad the shellac? Nice job in either case.    What a great gift!

Martin - it did come from Gerard Gilet. His
prices a very reasonable and good quality wood.

The shellac is sprayed Carlton. Two coats undiluted.
