Why spend $75 for the 2nd gen Santa Cruz nickels when you can spend less than half for the 1st gen Grovers. I'm sure Grover will put these 2nd gens out soon for half the price of the Santa Cruz tuners.

I think if I was going to spend that money I'd either buy the Gotoh 501s or pay a bit extra and get Waverlys. I am curious though as to how much better the 2nd gens are than the 1st.

Here is the link, they don't say as far as origin. But I bet Richard got a lock on the patent this time around, no matter who made them. They seem to be improved and talk about the differences from past tuners click

Maybe someone will buy a set and share their impressions. Just saw them on Santa Cruz site and thought you might like a look?

I called Santa Cruz a couple years back to ask if their tuners and the Grovers were the same and the person I spoke with said that Grover agreed to only produce these with the Santa Cruz name. He said that it was a huge shock to them that Grover started selling the tuners with the Grover name for half the price. It must have killed sales of the Santa Cruz tuners once everyone found out they were the same.

I bet Richard Hoover doesn't make the same mistake twice with whoever is making these 2nd gens. From what the SC employee was saying, it sounded like the agreement for Grover not to produce and sell under the Grover name was a gentlemen's agreement. I am very curious who is making these new tuners for SC.

John, From what I read, these are not the tuners from several years ago, but rather a NEW 2nd Generation, hence the name.

IF Grover made them, they'd actually be third generation of their StaTites. Truth is, there just isn't much info in the article. I bet we hear from someone soon who wants to Try Richard's new tuners. I thought it was intriguing he didn't give up on 'em, while admitting there was room for improvement on the Grover version one.

So, there are StaTites, 14 to 1, the StaTites (Santa Cruz) 18 to 1 and now these new 2nd Generation 18 to 1 Santa Cruz with unknown manufacture......

I do like the look. And it's nice they have several button offerings too.
