I noticed in Robbie O`s finishing video he french polished the neck.Is this okay for a steel string or just classicals?I don`t like necks that have that sticky nitro feel.Does any one know how a french polished neck feels? I also remember Hesh saying how much he liked one of JJ`s necks that was danish oil. What`s the scoop on that neck.

I have one guitar with a FP finish on the neck. It has a silky feel to it, not sticky like a nitro finish. I like mine.

Is that on a steel or classical? I`m not really sure it makes any differance. Also how is it holding up.The way it feels sounds good.

I've used FP on my last 3 guitars and love the feel of it.

James...I have done necks in 4 different finishes and personally don't like any of the lacquers.

I really like the feel of both FP and Danish Oil. Both have a dry, slick feel with the DO being more personally appealing. I recently spent about 10 minutes re-finishing the FP'd neck which seems to wear after 12 months of moderate play...no big deal.

The DO process is as simple as can be and the appearance rich and satiny. I applied about 4 coats by following the simple instructions on the can. I highly recommend DO. If I can be of more help, don't hesitate to ask.

Mine was a steel string. There is another thread about the durability of a FP neck finish. I dont play mine often enough to be able to tell how FP will hold up on a neck, but I do like the feel of it. It is a piece of cake to restore the finish if it ever does go south...

JJ-
Did you do the headstock in Danish Oil as well?
I'm trying to figure out how to do the transition (if any)between the DO and lacquer/FP if I want a glossy headstock.
I've got a couple of necks in cherry underway-they should be good candidates for DO since cherry doesn't have any need for pore filling.

Cheers
John

John...I do the headstock in whatever the finish the body is finished. The transition is gradual and looks better than a sharp line of demarcation.
