Paddy lives about an hour south of my workshop here in New Zealand and is a great luthier and a nice guy too!

However I just wanted to point out that this design was concieved by Canadian luthier Neil Russell about 10 years ago! Neil is a really nice guy who's care for his craft is obvious. Nice to see you here on the OLF, together with Richard Wilson. There are a few people here - including me - that build Weissenborn style instruments that would benifit lots from your advice and experience. It would be great to get people like Neil Russell and Paddy Burgin here too.

Kudos to Neil - especially getting Ben Harper to play one. I'm surprised that the double neck weiss hasn't taken off more.

I believe Ben Harper's doubleneck in that video is made from Tim Spittle's Blackwood... I recall hearing that it's too quiet to play without amplification. Of course Ben's making the thing sing quite beautifully there.

It's definitely great to see a growing group of Weissenborn builders here. I rarely post here but I've been stopping by for a year or so now and try to chime in when the conversation turns to Weisses.

Ben Harper is no fool for tone and neither is Neil Russell. Like I said Neil has been working on that design for ten years and after various prototypes im sure he has it down. Clearly a massive and mad sounding instrument built from mahogany.

By all means - not trying to suggest anything negative at all. Neil Russell's Weissenborns are absolutely breathtaking and the double necks are truly ingenious. His reputation among some of the world's top slide players speaks for itself.

Maybe better wording would be saying that amplification is ideal for sufficient volume. Not in itself a bad thing given that a guitar like this ideally lends itself to performance/recording moreso than acoustic playing. At any rate it's not anything I could comment on from personal experience nor am I attempting to, but rather what I've been told about the instrument. Given the quality and darkness of the video too it's hard to say whether it's blackwood (which I was referring to), or mahogany.

Tony, just had a look at your website... absolutely gorgeous guitar there. I think you've just convinced me to do a gloss finish on a future guitar.
