Lance, is there some particular reason why I'm finding the OLF forum pages to be the slowest loading of any Internet forum I visit?   It's bad enough on my Dell laptop, but on my Mac G4 it's so slow that I often just give up and go elsewhere.   I like the people and the content here, but I really don't like the software.   Also the lists of posts under each thread seem superfluous and don't give any real information, though they do take up screen space...

Hi Rick!
Sure is nice to see here again!

We are officially overwhelmed.
We are, right now as I write this in the process of moving the OLF to a new software package, phpBB. IT is going to take some time to get the bugs worked out because we are intent on bring the entire database of archives and members. Until then, try using the "Active Topics" button found above. This will limit the responses that the DB has to load.

We hope that the transition to the new place will be seamless.

I find that its "reloading" the main page(after navigating to a topic) thats really slow in loading - and that opening up the topics arent that bad
... so heres what I do -
I keep one win explorer window open, with the main page in it - then I left click on the topic I want to see and hit "open in new window", for each topic - when Im done reading or posting I just close the topic window and the main discussion area is right there in the other window.
That way the main window slowload doesnt bring me down
Works for me
Cheers

For those of us in the US it takes a RIGHT mouse click.

I had not thought of that.  Using a new tab or window to read the thread in.  If you are using IE7 or Firefox, you can pop back and refresh the list before you get to the bottom of the thread.  Then the delay wouldn't seem so bad.

I keep a link on my IE task bar that goes right to the Active Topics section. This speeds things up a LOT for me. You can select a time frame from which to view threads, and that will help immeasurably as well.

As Lance suggested, try using the "Active Topics" link at the top of the page. It will provide a list of the threads without showing the cascading discussions (not as database intensive). Then you just open the thread you want to read. I just tried the standard method (cascading) and it was slow. You will find Active Topics access much faster.
