Just wanted to let everyone know about this free 2D CAD software (Solid Edge). I'm downloading it now so I'm not aware of how good it is, but the company that sells it is here at my work now and claims that it's a good 2D software and it's free to download. (They said that someone may call you basically to inquire whether or not you want to purchase their 3D software, but if you tell them "no", that will be all). Solid Edge |

Thanks for the info Blain. Very timely for me, since I'm looking for the "right" CAD & CAM software for using with the cnc router that I'm building. |

I tried it. If you are a long time Autocad or Macauto useer You will hete it but only because the the input is like going from a standard calculator to a RPN calulattor. in other words the input secuence is kind of backas#ward to what I'm use to. Out side of that it is not bad after all it is free. Don I am not sure if it will export the info you need to do CNC programing from it. |

You still need a CAM package to go with it... If UGS is what I think it is, which is the newer generation of the old Unigraphics software, then I would love it. I never did like AutoCAD, which seemed backward to me. Not to mention, nowhere near as powerful as Unigraphics was. |

Ahaa!!?? I will fight you there. Just kidding! At least the last 3 editions of Autocad have them on par with anyones out side of finite element anylas capable programs Like Pro-E but only in FEA artena. MacDonald Douglas the original parent company of "Macauto Unigraphis" sold out some time ago the new company was then called just Unigraphics. I do not believe UGS is Unigraphics but I could be wrong. But this is Solid Edge package is nowhere near the cad package Unigrapics was. |

Don, Yes, UGS is the new Unigraphics. Unigraphics is now called NX (which would be their top end 3D modeling software.) We use CATIA at my work so NX would be compairable to CATIA. UGS also sells Solid Edge which would be compairable to Solid Works. And then they have the Free 2D drafting which I'm not sure what it could be compaired to.... I messed with the 2D package a little at work today and for Free software it is pretty good. As with every new software, it takes a little getting used to, but I could see it being pretty easy to use after some repetetion. |

In the price range of $1-infinity, I still claim Rhino is the best 2D/3D CAD software out there (and a cheap total solution with RhinoCAM). The best (currently) free CAD software I know of is called MOI3D. It's at http://moi3d.com and it's coded by the guy who originally coded Rhino. |
