As Promised, here are results of my first inlay project, and first guitar. I must confess, the guitar itself came from a Grizzly Industrial Kit. It was my first and I had a lot of help from Mr. Murphy (Murphy's Law). I actually gave the guitar to a longtime friend of mine who coordinates a music festival in North Carolina. He calls it Ulu Katu and used a Sun logo each year for banner, t-shirts, ect. . . The hardware for the guitar was not the best but the wood was great and I think with better hardware it would be a great guitar for the price. I replaced the headstock veneer with rosewood. (it was some cheap-looking stuff). Thanks for all the help I got with the inlay. As you can see, it turned out good enough for a first try. Next project: Laminated Archtop Electric per Jim England's book on building them. I have a 1963 6120 double cut-away. I would like to build a '59-60 shaped Gretsch single-cut. Jim uses a guitar to create a mold, but I don't have the guitar to make the body mold. What can I do? Is there anywhere I can get archtop dimensions for a '59 - '60's Gretsch? I've got dimensions from Benedetto's book, but I think they're different. One option seems to be to go to Guitar center, buy a new 6120., take it home and get a mold and return it. I don't want to do that. |

Very good job on the inlay and guitar! I, too, love the sun and the differing shades of the sun rays makes for an interesting inlay. Keep up the good work! |

Thanks. Sun Inlay Story: Actually, in my last topic a few months ago I mentioned that the Sun was made of Pearl and walnut Stained black. I used ground up African Blackwood to glue the inlay together. The epoxy I used to place to the pattern on the headstock sucked all the stain off the walnut I tried to re-stain it with no success due to my deadline on the project. It doesn't look like it was intended. Good point on tracing the guitar. I Eddie Haskell'd my way into tracing a tele at a guitar shop several years ago. My biggest concern is getting the arch correct. That will take a little more than tracing paper, right? |
