I'm wanting to build a set of custom tuner buttons for my guitar, the problem is that I can't seem to find anyone who carries the inserts used to tie the button to the shaft. I figure that I could make my own inserts, but if anyone knows a source for them, I'd appreciate the knowledge. |

One way to get a set of inserts is to buy a set of replacement knobs that have the inserts in them and pull them out. Mark |

One thing to consider is that one manufactures spline shaft may not be the same as the next. I take it from your post that this is a one of project so you know who's tuner you are making the buttons for. The odds are the spline is a standard spline based on the diameter of the shaft it is possible that they could be proprietary to that maker and not commercially available. |

All of this is true Micheal. I do have a couple of solutions, but any additional ideas would be helpful. I'm considering using a small piece of rectangular tubing to make the functional joint. |

You might contact potentiometer.com they may offer the inserts or would be able to direct you to a vendor. If your looking to make an insert yourself, cleanly, your going to need the right broach which would probably be expensive. You might also file the splines into tubing... not as clean or as easy, but if you only need two, it might be worth it. |

I have made custom tuner buttons by "removing" the button and leaving the core. This is done by making a lathe mandrel which simulates the shaft in the tuner. Doesn't need to be exactly the same type of drive such as spline, hex, square or round with flat as long as it will drive the tuner button. Each button is mounted to this mandrel and the excess button is simply machined off leaving the core. The custom buttons are then made with a bore to accept the core resulting from the above. Make the bore a press fit on the core and CA to keep it from slipping when tuning. I also roughed the core OD to give it a better bite when bonding to the new button. I've done this with Schallers some of which use a round shaft with a flat. Nelson |

Good idea Nelson .. if you have a lathe  ..
I can pretty much guarantee that the tuner posts are all different - at least gotohs and schallers. Plus depending on the style of the tuner itself, there are gotoh buttons that fit some of their tuners but not others. some just need longer or shorter screws ... others you are not so lucky. |

Nice one Nelson - but I have a student with a lathe, metal one at that  .... its cheaper that way and doesnt eat up my precious shop space.
