I'm a first time builder and here's what I did:
I routed a "test" channel into a piece of hardboard until I got a good fit.
Then I used the hardboard channel to set the circle cutter for routing into the guitar top.

hi to all! it been a while since i've logged in this forum. i do peek in everyday for i've been busy with my first guitar and this forum has helped me immensely. my question is: what do i do when the rosette i've purchased is not a perfect circle? it's off by a hair, but it would not fit snugly in the channel. aside from making a silly coaster out of it and getting a new one... thanks |

If you use Titebond or Hide glue, the water will likely swell it to fit, perfectly. Let us know how it works out if you choose to use it. Photos, remember we all like those photos.... |

its just one of those pre-made rosettes for a classical guitar. its not a complete circle, and its off by about half a millemeter, its bigger (or wider) than the channel. thanks |

If it's wider all the way around just cut the channel a little wider. You can also judiciously scrape the rosette to fit. |

Is there a reason you can't expand the channel to fit the rosette? And did you say that it wasn't a perfect circle... is it asymmetrical? |

Actually, all you really need to do it make sure the channel is wide enough to fit the rosette and glue it in place. The rosette will fit in the channel fine even if its not a perfect circle until then. |

That's why I asked if it was a complete circle. If it is open on the fb end you should be able to manipulate it enough to get it into the routed channel. Ron |

its asymmetrical by a few degrees bending outward. i did as jim suggested, removing material around the channel, and then gently (with some silent gnarling) pushed it in. fits good. thanks for your help guys!

hahaha! i apologize for not posting any pics of it. my camera is in my other office, the classroom. nonetheless i will get my camera as soon as the summer school ends and i will post pics of my first build (mistakes and all) for the forum. i am having a blast with guitar building, but i suspect that it is addicting. how far gone are you guys? again thanks for your patience and help |
