I am leaving in the morning to attend once again the Jose Romanillos Guitar building class held this time each year in Siguenza, Spain. When I get back I will post my comments about it. For those who are not familiar with it, Jose Romanillos and his son Liam teach a class each year in Siguenza, Spain (just 110 km north east of Madrid) in which ov er a two week span each of 18-20 builders will build a Romanillos model traditional Spanish classical guitar, working from blueprints using nothing but hand tools. For those that build classical guitars, it is an incredible experience. When you are done with the guitar, Jose will inspect your guitar and if it is complete will sign the inside of the guitar. Last year we had 18 people from 14 countries with skills ranging from never having built a guitar to pros that build more than one a week. The only part that is build before the class is the neck (with a V joint head or splice joint) but all of the rest (except perhaps rosette) are brought raw, along with the tools needed to build the guitar. Other than that a case is needed to bring home the guitar in... I posted comments after last years class that can be searched in the archive. Joshua French who also participates on OLF has attended and also recommends it. I am stopping by my friends at Madinter to pick up some wood and to talk about flamenco, am stopping by a couple of Granada's shops but most of the time will be at the Romanillos class. |

Shawn , you lucky chap. This is on my to do list when I retire in 3 years or so. I like building with hand tools only whenever practical, and I think it especially fitting when building a classical instrument, lute or guitar. I'm currently doing a Torres with no electricity, you get a much more intimate feel for the wood. Just cut the slots for Jose's double wedge. By the way, I just received some really nice sets of cypress from Madinter, the smell is gorgeous. I know you'll have agreat time and I expect a long post with lots of photos on your return Colin |
