Hi, I'm new to the forum, and while I started building about 10 yrs ago, I'm just completing my third guitar (1 flamenco, 1 classical Hauser '43 model, 1 OM acoustic). Recently I brought back some back and side sets from travels in India, salvaged from construction beams. It's Terminalia tomentosa, and highly flamed. I've heard it "can't be bent". Has anyone tried? Hi Ashaman, I have a couple sets of Indian Laurel that I imported a couple of years ago. Although I ahve not built with them I was impressed enough with their potential that I just brought in 10 more sets with a current order from my supplier in India. They are indeed dense and stiff, but that just means make them a bit thinner and then follow some of the recent advise on bending that has been posted over the past couple of week. Don't know, send me some and I'll try it out. Mr. Gray, that Terminal Tormentuosa wood sounds like a name someone made up. It torments you until you die? We all want to see some pictures of this beautiful wood. Just hit the little green arrow and the tree and make sure the photo is resized to under 200 kb. I bet it can be bent, one way or another. |

Oh! Forgot to say. Like my fellow OLFer’s have already said. Show a pic or two of the wood. There are some really keen eyes here at the OLF, and they might be able to help after seeing the grain structure and such. Robert |

Hi Ashaman, and welcome! Someone put the name "Indian Laurel" to the scientific name. Is that correct? (I mean, is "Indian Laurel" correct?) I saw I. Laurel built into a small table, and it was as curly as flamed maple. I could hardly believe my eyes. (My bro will remember, perhaps, the table built by a Mr. Coleman from Atlanta.) Well, anyway, I too would like to see a pic. And Shane, if you've got any of the stuff for sale, drop me a PM. Steve |

Working Properties: Rather difficult to work with hand tools if grain is irregular, machines well, a good turnery wood, reported to be difficult to glue and nail. I'm lookin on the web for photos... |

Just as food for thought: Terminalia Superba is Limba, so they're at least related (which, I know, is no guarantee for much of anything in terms of properties, but still...) |
