I'm having to buy a laptop for school and for using with my CNC project, and am getting a Mac. The issue of course is that I need to run XP Pro also on it for the CAD/CAM software etc. Is there anyone out there who has upgraded to Vista or other who has a XP Pro license they are no longer using and are willing to sell? Thanks, Don |

Don, You should still be able to buy it online from other sellers. I bought mine a while back from NewEgg I believe. Take a look at this link and see if any of them work for you. I'm sure there's many more sellers than what I have found here too. Windows XP Pro |

One more thing to add... Unless you have a full version of a previous Windows, you will need to purchase a Full Version of Windows XP. If you ever format your computer and reinstall Windows you always have to start with a full version and then can use the upgrade after that. So if you have a full version of Windows 98 and an upgrade of XP. IF you format you will have to install the Full version of 98 and then install the upgrade to XP every time. |

Nope. You will just have to put the validating disk in the drive, then WXP will validate that you have a legit older version and install itself on a clean drive. I have been through this before. More than once. |

I might add, that I think that was the case with the older versions. But all of the Windows versions before XP had an underlying verson of DOS installed, so it had to be there for full installation. |

Don, Running Windows on a Mac can be VERY slow. You might want to rethink this. |

That is a good point. I do have a USB external drive that I have really not been using. I do a synchronize between my work desktop PC and my Notebook PC every day, so I have a complete data copy. I also use, don't know if you know about this or not, Carbonite Backup. It is great it keeps all of my data backed up to the internet all the time. Works in the background, and just keeps changing the data. Cost is only $50/year. I think that's pretty cheap for that type of service. All encrypted data. 18Gig / 80,000 + files backed up. It is very seamless. If anyone is interested, you can go to www.carbonite.com, or you can PM me with an email address and I will refer you to them via their referral service, for which I get free months. Up to you. Don't feel obligated. Either way, I would go look at the website first and understand what it is. |

I have the home version of XP and run AutoCAD 2006 on it without any problems. Just got home from dog/apartment sitting for a friend. She left her laptop behind so I could get my fix. It had been way too long since I played with Macs, but it was interesting. Not sure I'd want to pony up that kind of money, but it was a sweet laptop. |

What Hesh mentioned is correct. I'm getting the 15" MacBook Pro, which I will need to install a full version of XP Pro. All I really need (I think) is the license, and my office can install the full version from discs. But I have to own the license, which means that novody else can have that installed on their computer. I may have to buy a new copy of it, which would be a drag, but I prefer to be legal as much as possible. |
