REALLY good Adi is very hard to find right now. We here at McPhersons have
been on a search for some time. Of course we have been VERY picky as of
late, and only the best of the best will do. No runout, very even grain (with
the tightest in the center), no streaking or uneven color, and well quartered.
About the only place we can find that is over at Old Standard wood. And
even there we had to send a bunch back (although I thought it was perfectly
fine, Matt McPherson demands as close to perfection as possible)

Another vote for Old Standard. It's pricy but John has some primo master grade sets. Personally I like the lower grades with "Hard Line" much better but its just personal preference.

   Try to track down Carl Barney up in Southbury, CT. He's right off of exit 14
on Route 84 in the beautiful Hudson Valley region. He has always had a
good supply of great quality Adi tops.

   The best that I've ever gotten were gotten from Carl....and he's a fun guy
to deal with to boot!

Walter at Euphonon had some too not too long ago. He's quite a character, but his stuff is usually spot on.

I learned about John from a 19 year old kid in Greenville Texas, well actually he was out in the sticks near Wolfe City. Fiddle maker. That was back in '99.

I've bought some nice adi from Carl Barney and Brad Goodman. Brad has some nice sets on his web site Goodman Lutherie Woods. I'm sure either of these two gentlemen can fix you right up.

Since Michael mentioned that he has already spoken to Steve at Colonial, we all assumed that he had exhausted the OLF sponsors and was looking for another source.

Carl Barney was at the ASIA symposium and had some very nice Adi there. The address that Al posted is correct. (my business card is nice and new!).

Hesh that's a fine looking top. I know you've build with a lot of different types of spruce -- is Adi your fav?

I just bought some really nice looking lutz from Shane at high mountain tonewoods and it will be used on the next couple of guitars that I build.

I have bought adi and sitka from beachtonewood. Nice looking and sounding stuff and reasonably priced also. The ash guitar I just built has some of his adi on it.

I'm pretty sure you can blame the Hand Made Music series on the DIY channel for the recent popularity of Adi.  With all honesty, I really cant tell that Adi sounds any better than some of the Sitka or Englemann that I have built with. If it is what the customer wants and is willing to pay for , I guess I'll buy some more and use it.

I've heard about this program, the mandolin people often mention a (series of?) episode(s?) showing Lynn Dudenbostel building a F5. Are there shows about guitar building too, and do they mention red spruce especially? I would have guessed that the ever increasing interest in vintage Martins and Gibsons that had red spruce tops had a lot to do with the recent popularity of this wood too.

Yes, Arnt. It's a really good series with Lynn building a vintage looking Martin. He does indeed use red spruce and it starts with them finding the tree and proceeds through the entire build. Very good series of 4 or 5 episodes, I think.
