Sunday mornings at Peet's on Vine in Berkeley, you could smell the coffee from blocks away. There was usually a motley group of regulars standing on the sidewalk talking and drinking coffee.

Ok, so after the last coffee thread, I saw some good info and decided, I'm really jonesing for some good coffee so I'll take Paul's advice and give Peet's a try. I go ahead and order some coffee online and then the next morning I open up the newspaper and see the founder Peet, has passed away and died at the age of 87. They mentioned he was one of the first to serve gourmet coffee long before it was in vogue. Peet also gave advice to the founders of Seattle-based Starbucks Coffee, who came to Berkeley to meet him and learn about his business. He trained some of them to roast coffee and then sold them roasted beans when they opened their first store in 1971. He refused to sell the coffee until they prepared it the right way. On a side note related to Starbucks, as part of our training in the altitude chamber, the flight physiologist would explain the effects certain chemicals and foods had on our body. He mentioned that Coke had about 34 milligrams of caffeine, Pepsi One and Mountain Dew both had about 55 mg, Red Bull and Jolt had about 80 mg, a cup of coffee had about 100 mg, and the kicker...a large Starbucks had around 585 mg of caffeine. Man, talk about getting your heart pumping. No wonder there are so many addicted to Starbucks. I'll let you all know how I like Peet's when it arrives. Cheers! John |

Wow, look at the size of those little cups in the picture. Our portion sizes have definitly grown over the years. Today it's not a full cup of coffee unless your eyeballs are floating when you're done. |
