I dunno, it seems like a while since there have been some rosette pics. So what the heck? Here are a couple that are being worked on now, and the rosettes have just been inlaid. The first one is going on a Brazilian RW OM, w/ a bearclaw Sitka top. Since the bindings will be some of Uncle Bob's crazy Sapele, I thought I'd use the same material for the rosette. The Sapele is bordered by BRW / maple / Bubinga / maple / BRW.





Next one is going on a Black Limba FS. We were able to use some scraps left over (after the back was cut out) and bookmatch them for the rosette. The B. Limba is bordered by green ab, with the hopes of getting in the same family of colors.

I like the sapele, wow it's great. I think I'd like the limba better if it had more figure and were turned on a 45. Both look really nice, but the sapele has real curb appeal.

Nice work Steve. I wouldn't change a thing - to me putting the grain at a 45 would make it look "off" in the grand scheme of things. I like the refined look of how you've got it.

Do you make your own purfling strips from veneer, and if so what is your method and what thicknesses are they?

Bruce, I'm afraid that I'm with Joshua on the 45 degree thing. I want the inlay to look *absolutely* intentional.
I DO agree with you about the figure, though. We got the "busiest" piece available, and still it looks a bit vanilla. That said, I think once the finish is applied, it should pop up a good bit.

Arnt, yes, those are homemade purfling strips, simply cut off of sheets. I lay a sheet on the bench, place a heavy steel straightedge on top, while leaving about 1/8"+ showing, then carefully cut with a sharp Xacto knife. Nothing special about that...it's just how I do it. These strips run in the 1/32"-1/28" range. I didn't even measure them, so I can't give exact numbers.

Colin--let me guess: neither? (Afterall, they ARE in Sitka. )

Mike, lately these are the only kinds of rosettes I've been doing. Now, I DO like herringbone, and have one in the works. But these have a certain "small-shop" look and feel about them.
The fellow who is getting the sapele rosette said he wanted something "woody", something more "earthy"-- whatever that could mean. (I tried smearing dirt on the top, and it just didn't look right...    ) Actually, I do know what he meant: he already has an over-the-top pearl encrusted guitar, and he wanted one far more simple as a counterpoint. One where the wood does the talking. I hope my interpretation of his directive is going in the right direction!

I think the rosette on a guitar is the first thing to catch the eye, and you've got 2 eye catchers there, great job Steve.
