Wow what a wonderful forum!!!!!
Just wanted to say hello to everyone and introduce myself. I've been a wood addict for the past 12 years who needs help. I've thought about locating a local chapter of WA (woodaholics anonymous) to start a 12 step recovery, but I'm having difficulty with the first step, admitting that I have a problem.
After making kitchen cabinets, tables, jewelry boxes, chess boards, etc., I decided I wanted to build guitars. You're all probably thinking "this guy is nuts" right? Right! Since I make my living as a chiropractor, it's not about making money. I'm addicted.
Hope to learn from all of you who are light years ahead as I go through the process of jig making to start my first build. I thought about going the kit route at first, but decided I wanted to control every aspect of building and learn from my mistakes instead.

Welcome Vinman...you're as normal as anyone on this forum!

What are you interestd in building? We can help get you started. I'd recommend doing some reading and research in advance of taking the plunge so that you can be better informed on your choices. Let us know where you're at in that regard. Good luck!

Welcome, Vinman!  You are right, this is a great forum.  everyone here is a little crazy, and most of us have pretty bad cases of W.A.S. (wood acquisition syndrome).  There is no 12 step program that can overcome the temptations of our sponsors, and they blatantly display examples of their Zoot to keep us hungry.  If you hang around long enough you'll experience a Swap Meet, the ultimate temptation.  You will probably also learn that all you know about guitar building will fit in a thimble compared to the generous individuals here.  JJ is right, though, if you haven't already done it, find a couple of books and read, read, read.  It will definitely give you direction and a level of comfort with the process and the sequence of the build.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

My interests are in building steel string.  I've read Cumpiano's book several times now, and I've started building jigs.  I've done my own radiused dishes, go bar deck, dreadnaught form, and I'm currently making a bunch of cam clamps.  I'm going to start my first build with curly maple (back, sides, neck) that was given to me by a friend.  If I screw up, it won't cost much.

I also have some bubinga that was given to me (almost perfectly 1/4'erd) to do a second, third and fourth build to start me journey.

I also have a special piece of brazilian RW that was given to me by  patient last year when he heard that I had the guitar itch.  The board measures 1 1/2" x 11" x 75".  I told him that I couldn't accept such an expensive piece, but he insisted saying that he bought eight boards for $15 each at a gun show in 1967, and that his kids would probably just give it away when he passes anyway. (he's 85)  This is one I'm going to have to have cut professionally, and will not use it until I've 'cut my teeth' on less expensive stuff.

Well, since I'm addicted to BRW even in picture form, here's how to do it:

The little box that has a tree in it is the "add a picture to a thread" selection. The one with the arrow allows you to point to a picture on a different website. Below, highlighted is a link to the Forum Codes which will help ou with any html questions, such as adding bold or italics to your text. I believe images must be under 200Kb to post.

Nice brw. Welcome to the forum, Vincent. Carving a maple neck will be a lot tougher than using a softer wood, but you probably know that since you have woodworking experience. Keep us up to date with your progress.
