Does someone have a resource they could point new builders like myself to that has some recordings of tap tones on unbraced and braced tops and/or backs. There seems to be much discussion on the subject, but without some good examples to listen to, it is like getting a haircut over the phone. I do realize there are lots of variables involved, especially with regard to the recording process, but there are also some constants that would lead a novice to understand or at least compare what they hear in their own work with what they hear in someone else's. Thanks in advance if anyone can help out. |

I think that is the problem. There are no constants on on braced and unbraced tops. They will vary with the wood and the thickness, as well as the variations in the bracing ..... not to mention the recording techniques. One of the recommendations I keep hearing is John Mayes' DVD on "Voicing". |

There was a post a few days ago, I think its on page 3 or 4. He recorded some sounds, Im gonna do my test top soon here also.
Does anyone have a link to a free frequency analyser software? Ive seen them, they are free. |

thanks for the plug, but actually most people are hip on the Advanced voicing one. The first voicing set is more on basic braces, placement, gluing, and some voicing near the end.... Prolly should have called the video bracing... |

John's Advanced voicing is the one to get. I just returned a copy to Smartflix. You can rent it as an single DVD without having to buy the set. Or you could buy the set from John. He's a very funny guy

A little reminder here. It's convenient and cheap to rent these, but the people who create them for us get no royalties on the rentals, only on the sale to the rental outfit. I recommend buying them. The authors get a cut, plus you get to build a library!

John's set is definitely worth the price of admission. Much funnier and informative than anything on late night TV. |
