I was working late tonight in the workshop when I spied this fellow strolling past the workshop doors. He scuttled up a nearby tree and it looks like he plans on spending the night there.

Hesh, We were warned about the Drop Bears when we went horseback riding in Australia. We had our 13-year old daughter with us and she took it to heart and spent much of her time looking up into the trees. Never saw one up close, though :) Now the jumping ants were quite the problem! As it eats eucalyptus leaves does that make it a "Gummy Bear"
Given the look in it's eyes it could be a Gremlin Koala. |

The sting from those suckers is 3 times as bad as a bee but no kamakazi's here, one ant can just keep biting and biting, you get a few on you at a time, and you got real trouble, I have seen them around 40mm long. And you guys wonder why tonewood is expensive, you try going out in the bush with those savage little buggers out there. Cheers Kim |

Can't have been too great a shot, he missed! That thing's still sitting in the tree! Mushrooms and red wine is my advice. It's funny when you go to one of these wilderness parks where tourists get to hold a koala and get there photo taken. You watch their eyes as the cute little beast is being handed over, and it's all smiles. Until the claws dig in, then it's like "get off me! Get it off me!"

The little guy wandered off a few hours after I took the pic....hes a young male and this time of year they tend to go walkabout in search of a mate. Koalas aren't uncommon around here even though its suburbia. During the hot summer months they are known to wander into houses looking for water. Anyway it made a welcome break from the usual parade of magpies, parrots and possums that frequent my back yard. |

We've got a ring tailed possum in our front yard. I want to cut that tree down 'cause it's where our new drive way is supposed to be. But I can't get him to budge. I guess he likes that tree. |

Martin, That's a great shot! I just watched a program about the diminishing areas where Koalas can live and eat. Is it a real problem there? Hesh, If you can ever make it, go to visit the boys at Orange County Choppers. I've met the Teutuls and got a quick shop tour....back before they were famous. Their shop has grown multiple times and has moved since my first visit. They're about 4 hours or so from us by car, but I've flown up into Montgomery Airport with a close friend who owns a small plane and one of Orange County's custom bikes so it takes us less than 90 minutes. Those guys are true artists and really build on the fly...designing as they go along. You can't get near the family guys now that they're so famous and busy from what I hear, but they do have a nice show room where alot of the Discovery Channel bikes are on display. We're planning a run up there for a day soon. If the African guitar is still here by then, I'll take it along to get them to have a look at it and hopefully get a few photos with them. I spent a summer in Australia - one night, while on a large sheep farm, we went fox hunting and koala tipping - where the goal was to spot a koala, run up the tree and grab it. The guys that I was with said this was great fun. Much to my dismay, we did not find any koalas, but did however get a few foxes and some rabbits...To this day I am still in partial belief as to whether you can run up a tree and grab a koala...maybe you lucky australian guys can verify or deny? On a side note - I have been to a few continents, and I have never seen one with a starry night that is so beautiful as the one Australia has to offer. It absoutely blew my mind - and I was only a few hours inland... |
