PBS, here, showed the season opening performance of the NY symphony orchestra last night, and they featured Yo-Yo Ma. What a treat to watch!! Not only is he unbelievably great, he must have callouses 1/2" thick on those fingers.

A real talent, no question. I got to hear him live at the Kennedy Center a few years ago, wow!

You know his mom's name is Yo Ma-Ma...sorry couldn't resist

The thing I like most about him, besides his incredible talent, is his humility, and his love of all kinds of music. He's just as comfortable sitting in on a ho-down as he is in front of a symphony orchestra.

Anyone ever heard his bluegrass stuff? I can't remember who he plays with but I want to say the album is Appalachian Breakdown. It's pretty cool.

I have his album from Bach's Cello Suites and love it. Yesterday I was
struggling between one of his albums and an album from The Emerson. I
went with The Emerson, but love Yo Yo Ma. You've got to enjoy hearing
one of the best cellos in the world being played by one of the most
respected cellists.

I got to meet him when we introduuced him to the Alto violin; the 20" viola that's played like a 'cello. We went back stage after a concert, and he passed out chocolate chip cookies to all and sundry before trying the instrument. If only it was as easy as he makes it look! He used that Alto for a year, and then gave it back to my friend Tom Knatt, because he needed to get all of his nickles in one heap to by the Strad 'cello. Later he borrowed it back, and then bought one to use on the 'New York Album' to record the Bartok Viola Concerto. That was cool, but I still think my favorite performance of his was the 'Concerto for 'Cello, two Honkers, and a Dinger' that he did on 'Sesame Street'. It's wonderful when somebody with that much shear talent, who has worked that hard, can leaven it with such a great sense of humor.
