I have a crack repair in house on an older model Ovation Celebrity. No real problems with the repair it's self but I had to make a plaster bowl for the body to set in to get the body stable while working. My neck rest-support just did not hold the rounded body stable at all. Lots of room to work inside because of the deep dish and no back bracing, but I can't say I am enjoying this much. I had made a support bowl for a newer Ovation Celebrity a year ago, but this one has a much different shape to it than the newer deep dish Ovations. I don’t have real question. Just blowing steam over nothing...After this I am not doing any more repair work except maybe refrets

Good for you. I totally agree. I've sworn off, too. The last Ovation repair I did was to reset a neck... which is glued in with some noxious goo. (Which would be a great name for a rock band, don't you think?)
This was such an experience that my response to it was just like yours: Never again.

I really should not feel this way. The repair is as easy as a crack repair comes. I guess fixturing up for simple crack repair is bugging me. It's is hard to turn down someone who has spent 3k on a box you built for him. Especialy after his word of mouth has brought you two other clients. One of these days I will have to find An Ovation that is wrecked beyond repair and take a look at there neck join. Something tells me it is scarry.

I have their latest CD. They play nothing but aciustic guitars. Brand? I think they're "McKnights" but I'm not sure.

You'd have to get a bunch of "wrecked" Ovations. They've used a lot of different methods of holding their necks on over the years. The one I liked the best was the bolt on mortise and tenon. I'm not sure if they use on any of their guitars anymore. I purchased a pair of 6" and a pair of 7" Besse clamps (that open about 14" and 16" respectively) several years ago that have helped me work on Ovations. I can clamp each side across a padded board laid across the bowl back and reach almost everywhere on the top. The clamps are heavy and expensive (I got them through a group woodworking club purchase) but they do the job. They also help keep the guitar from rolling around when repairing top cracks.Neil38433.6392708333

I have them brought to me often. I will do the basic setup and easy stuff. Never again a neck set or mess with the top. I just say thanks for the consideration, but not something I work on.

So my question is, if you built him a $3k box why is he still foolin around with an Ovation?      Introduce him to ebay... maybe he can find it a new home.    bpoling38433.8438888889

Bar Stage guitar. He is smart and uses his Mp-OM14 for home studio or other safe venues. I can’t say that I blame him. West Texas bars are not know for being dossal places.

Ahh, well, if that is the guitar's "calling", I'd recommend leaving the crack in there, as no one will know the difference, least of all the guitar itself.

He apparently felt the same way for a while. But the top is shifting the bridge's axis due to the cracks, and is now really affecting intonation. Past the 7th fret it is very auditable.

funny you should mention refrets. Over on the MIMF repair forum, someone asked how to refret an Ovation aluminum fretboard. Turns out the frets were milled into the fretboard -- no replacement possible except via tig welding. Plurality over there has agreed that filing off the frets and going fretless is the way to go.

Someone said Kaman offered to buy Martin. Kaman was reported to have said that Martin didn't know anything about manufacturing.

And here I was thinking that Ovations had no real purpose
