I`m used to doing a scarf joint on my necks. This includes buying a neck blank and neck block to glue up the heel of the neck, and leaves enough left over for an 1 1/4 thick neck block inside the guitar for a mortise.I`ve noticed that some suppliers have neck blanks about as cheap as I can get 2 pieces of wood for a scarf joint and heel, already pre sawed ready for carving. But then I would need the neck block inside the guitar. So I was wondering where some of you folks get a chunk for that piece, that is about 5"x 3"x 1 1/4",with the grain orientation running with the grain of the sides. Thanks James |

James, Steve at Colonial sells neck and tail blocks. Very good quality. I've bought many from him, and they are very reasonable. Ron |

I made my last 2 by laminating 3 pieces together like plywood. Great way to use up off cuts. I seem to have heaps of them collecting on every flat surface in my shop. Don't know if there are any advantages or not, but to my thinking it would have to be stronger structurally. Much less likely to split, and there is going to be some edge grain for the top and back to glue to. |
