Due to a surfeit of clutter in my workshop, I'm using my conservatory as an "overflow" workshop at the moment. I was gluing a back brace on with hot hide glue yesterday and my "mobile" go bar deck was on the floor there - nice and warm, humidity at 45%, lovely. I came back after ten minutes to do glue clean-up and was puzzled to find a wet patch on the wood surrounding the brace covering about a quarter of it's length. I was puzzled as I didn't think hhg leaked it's moisture into the surrounding wood quite like that Then I looked around an it clicked - at the other end of the room was Molly, the dog, with a guilty (but satisfied ) look on her face:



Out of curiosity I left the brace in the go bar deck to see what would happen and then removed it today to replace it. In the area without the added ingredient - dog slobber - there was brace wood left on the back when I removed the brace, but in the "lick zone" it was totally clean

As far as the Conservatory goes it's doggone Mind you - the next time I want to cleanly remove a hot-hide glued bridge . . .

Can you imagine the fear in her eyes if the go bars decided to "explode" when she was sniffing around them. You'd likely still be pealing her off the ceiling today.

Dogs love HHG. Based on Mario's recommendation, I take left over glue and make little Hershey's Kisses sized dog treats. They are best when one or two days old before they fully harden.

I have a friend who's a furniture restorer, and he's the first who told me about dogs' love for hide glue. Apparently he's had more than one repair due to a corner of a hide veneered piece lifting from age or whatnot, followed by the family dog promptly removing the rest of the veneer to get at the glue.

Molly is absolutely goregeous.

Seeing her pic has tipped the balance in favour for us getting a dawg. Husband and I have been in discussion about it for a few months now. Guess if we do, the hide glue will be on the top shelf!!!

Looking at Hesh's picture, I wonder what sort of breed I should get? (If anyone says Chiwawa, I'm leaving!! )

You should get one of these very active and ferocious guard dogs.



They only weigh 145 pounds and they are great around the guitar shop. He would actually have to amputate the chair off his a** before he would head for the hide glue! But really Shogun is a wonderful dog....as gentle as they come, unless.....

He is a bull mastiff. Now, our giant schnauzer, she is another story!! The total opposite, my wife has created a monster in her, you can't go outside without her constantly dropping tennis balls at your feet so she can fetch them.

LOL, great dogs! It's fantastic when you've got the space for that sort of size. I was offered a bull mastiff the other day...that started off the debate...

Border Collies are great-and mad!

Hmm just think out loud here Dave, but if you forgo the worming tablets for a while and then watch careful for the rear end skid, you may be onto a new kind of preheated hide glue dispencer.

You just need to be follow'n ol'Molly around and have you're braces at the ready for when that ich starts to itch

Yup,

We always take a wide berth around Border Collies, our schnauzer is nuts enough......Border Collies....you need sheep, lots of sheep or you have to be a marathon runner. They need to work!
