I didn't think there was any demand for these?
I do mine on 3/16ths plexiglass.. they look great and work great. when grading you can see where the figure will line up with the instrument..

I just took a peek at LMIs website.. 20 bucks for a cut piece of acrylic.. seems kinda steep to me.. I'll definately look into this next week.

Guys-
Ill make a call monday and see if I can get some cut out of plexi or Lexan - as i said, I have L-00, Om - Dread, 12 fret dread - SJ - Size 5, Parlor , MY L1 - and a few others, maybe this could be an OLF product?

Ill check into it and get back

Lance & Jason:

thanks for taking an interest in this. I would love to have templates of most of the major styles out of 3/8 or so lexan or plexi as long as they are reasonably accurate. I can trace drawings onto hardboard and sand to the line, but even there there is more variation than I would like to start with. My thinking is that if I can start with a near 'perfect' template then that minimizes any variation that I will introduce from that point on. I am anxious to see how this develops. I think this would be a great product for OLF to work with. thanks, Tom Harbin

Lance, If you can make'em, it'll be worth the gas to pick them up myself!

I'm not sure if you can beat the price at LMII. Lexan is expensive and plexi isn't nearly as durable. Here are a couple of links to where I've purchased plastic supplies in the past. If you already have molds, it isn't hard to make your own. I prefer full top rather than half top.

Hey, I have been thinking the same thing. I made an OM out of plex, but it is not perfectly accurate. I spent several hours cutting it out and sanding, but I am still not happy. A machine cut template would be better.   I would be interested in getting some too. Sounds like another group order.

I agree, I think we will have a hard time beating the LMI price, if and when they are available. I spoke to them on the phone Friday, and they are not expecting any more anytime soon.   Tom

The only reason I think I can do better is that I get my current ones done for free. The guy who owns the lazer cutter is a friend from highschool/church that I've known for almost 10 years... He lets me hang at the shop for extended periods of time as long as I talk guitar with him (he's a fanatic ) He does the cutting and vectoring for free.. All I pay for is the lexan. I'm sure he'd be interested in running a batch of them if I actually paid him and quit clogging up his shop with guitar related unpaying work ;)

Lemme know Lance.. I don't want to step on anyones toes if you want to take a stab at it

It would be fantastic if we could purchase body AND side templates. I would be in for L-00, 000, OM, SJ, and J Both of these with and without cutouts.

One of the things I did not read in this string is the small variances in each luthiers models. For example my OM is 15" LB, many others are 15-1/4" LB. Not to mention slight location differences in waist locations and radii used. I could go on with other things that don't make a lot of difference as a whole, but if you already have bending molds and other fixtures the a "canned" template is not likely to match exact from one builder to the next. However, if you are just starting to prepare to build tooling for a specific size of guitar this could be a great way to obtain you specified shape.

Just keep in mind you are buying someone else’s pattern.

If someone is going to make templates at a good price, count me in. I would love a dread and a OOO/OM.

Side templates to match?????

Hey guys I looked into this and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a problem getting a batch of these done..It would just be a matter of getting a plan for maybe 4 or 5 of the most popular templates ( I should have them already anyways ) and getting a limited commitment from some people who can guarentee they want one,two/a set..

Sides I don't think I can do..
1) they vary from builder to builder.. even the back templates would vary.. you'd only want to use these for grading wood or maybe rough cutting with a copy bit & spacer.
2) I don't think the lazer I have access to goes more than 24 inches..

Other than that I think you'd be happy with what I can do here.. Here's a picture of a Gibson SG template we did a while back.

I'm still working out pricing.. He does mine free but I'd have to work out a price per template if I was in there cutting a lot..

I'll be gone for the weekend but when I get back I'll get on this and get some price estimates and find out what plans I have and what plans I'll need.. I'll probably start with a batch of dread templates just because I think I already have the vectored file ready to go and move on from there.
