Well while the body is in the finish booth I decided it is time to shape the peghead on the Yellow Rose of Texas dreadnought. I laid my shape template on the raw peghead and low and be hold. with my standard peghead shape and tuner locations part of the flag on the inlay falls under the tuner washer. this morning I sketched up a couple of alternate pegheads to compensate for the issue. One is a the shape of ny standard peghead but wider. The other is sort of Gibson-ish in shape

So what do you think?

Why not move it up and eliminate the MP logo this time around? They seem like they're fighting for attention to me.
I like peghead #3 best.

I think that Don's advice is sound.
I agree with these gents on #3 also, but also think you don't need the logo w/ the Yellow Rose.
Think Martin, and how they ditch their logo if they use the flower pot inlay, etc.

By the way, I saw one of your Yellow Rose inlays ono a banjo this past weekend at the LINT show. Looked great!

I hate mustache pegheads but that may be the way I go.

Humm????? Just for curiosity sake; How many of you that have a registered logo or even unregistered logos that normally is inlaid on your peghead have left it of of a commissioned instrument for what ever reason?

My logo is the one piece of name recognition that goes where ever one of my instruments go. I doubt I could be talked into leaving off my logo from one of my guitars. I have in the past placed the Logo on the rear of the peghead. Just to me personally it is like and artist signing a painting so I decided they go on the front regardless. But I do appreciate you opinions non the less.

That said, and for curiosity sake; How many of you that have a registered logo or even unregistered logos that normally is inlaid on your peghead have in the past left it of of a commissioned instrument, and for what ever reason?

MP, I wouldn't leave your logo off the peghead. Bad idea for marketing/branding and future name recognition.
Is the inlay already done? If not why not just tuck the flag behind the rose a bit and keep your original headstock? If it is already done, I'd be inclined to tell you to keep your headstock shape (again with the branding) and just make it a bit wider. #2?

I was going to say #3, but #2 is growing on me.  It's less common looking, and less pointy (technical term) so it seems like it would compliment a dreadnought more.  I've always thought those larger "Gibson-ish" style pegheads looked goofy on any acoustic.

As far as the logo, I was going to suggest the back of the peghead as well, so I got nothin' new for ya.

Maybe downsize it, make it more subtle, and put it on the trussrod cover instead, or maybe even down on the fretboard or the back of the headstock.

I use my D.E.Williams on all guitars, but if I were to do a torch, or have Craig Lavin inlay something, like say an Osprey or a Hawk or a fish, I would remove my logo from the headstock and put it elsewhere or only on the label. I understand the branding thing, but there's a time and a place for everything. This isn't only about marketing yourself, but also your art. Take a look at Jim Olson's website and see if he ever leaves the big "O" off his headstocks. You bet he does...and if anything, the instrument without your typical logo might someday be more collectible.

I like #3 best and with the logo.  I agree Branding/Marketing is important.

What software do you use for drawing/prototyping these pegheads?

Paul the inlay is inlaid into the veneer but the veneer is not yet glued to the peghead. I am looking right now a rotating the inlay and veneer about 1.5 deg to the right about the center of the rose. this clears the washer with about 1/32" clearance and still leaves the rose in the center of the peghead. that will tilt the curl pattern of the veneer about 1.5 deg toward the right as well. I don't think that is a biggie though.

Personally, I don't think the logo being on the headstock has to be an absolute hard and fast rule. I think when other inlay is in place there is a very good reason to consider omitting it.

For instance the Madonna guitar Craig inlaid for me didn't have my name on it -- and that is somewhat of a signature piece for me despite the fact that my name is not on the top of the guitar.

And... there are lots of builders who don't have their names on their guitars... Somogyi, Traugott, etc. but I don't think their brand suffers for it.

So.. I guess my bottom line is I don't think it is a brand killer to leave it off.

I really think in this particular case it is more of a choice of aesthetic preference. If you leave it off the headstock you can still get it in the fb.

However, if a client just asked you to leave it off and did not have a good aesthetic reason for it I would resist the effort, or try to make some accomodation about locating it in another place.

I think having clients dictate aesthetic elements opens a whole can of worms that we should be very careful of.

You might also want to consider just sliding the veneer over to the right by a few mm. The rose doesn't have a pronounced center line so no one would ever guess that you moved it.

If you want to require that your logo is always on the guitar, then adopt the convention that it goes on the 12th fret if there is a headstock inlay.

No Brock I cant put it on the fretboard I have full lenght vine and the cli3ents name there.

I hear what you are all saying but it ain't coming off the peghead. After the last one I put on the reverse side of the peghead I just decided no more. Just a rule for me. It does not mean I think any of your comments were wrong or invalid.

Heel too small/ logo to big. I have a boo koo of the logos made up by Andy DePaule, as well as a bit and fixture to inlay them with. I am not changing the size.
