How can I tell if my nut/saddle is bone or synthetic? I've read ALOT about replacing synthetic nut/saddle with bone. Is there a way to test for bone? Thanks, Chris Nielsen |

Sand it and smell it. Bone stinks! |

Bite it, if it leaves tooth marks it's synthetic. |

Kids... The way to tell any synthetic material from a natural material is to touch it with a hot pin, and take a whiff. Bone, Tortois shell, pearl, ivory, etc.., all smell of burnt protein, which smlles like burnt hair or fingernails(protein). Synthetic materials will smell of solvents. Careful touching a hot pin to anything you think may be celluloid, as it is flammable. Big time. The pin doesn't need to be glowing red. Just heat the point of it with a match for a second and touch it to the piece in question. |
