I have a Lie Nielson low-angle block plane and on of their spokeshaves. I wouldn't trade them for anything else on the market.

I used them for a month or two right out of the box. Never even sharpened them. I have sharpened the plane now. They both just work flawlessly for me, so I never hesitate to recommend them.

I agree with Dave, I will NEVER, and I mean NEVER EVER EVER EVER buy anything other than lie-nielson planes again. I have the low angle plane you are referring to and it makes joining tops so dang easy it's scary.

You can't go wrong with them..

Now for that Baily, if it's one of the old bedrocks or before they got cheap you can spend some time and make those really good planes again. It takes some effort and time but I've seen a bedrock plane highly figured rosewood without tearout, I about fell over when he pulled it off and I wanted the plane

Which model is the 71/2. The only low angles I found were 12?

Michael,

If the plane is only letting you down "lately" it probably just needs to be tuned up well and have the blade sharpened. Spend some time with it truing the sole and getting everything to fit right (cap iron, frog, etc), and some time sharpening the blade and it should work fine. Assuming a decent blade nearly any plane can be made to work quite well.

We have the full Lie -Nielsen line of planes at the school I teach guitar building at they are worth every penny! Whenever I have a choice I reach for one of their planes.
By the way, One of my guitars one first place at the annual Colorado Woodworkers guild exposition and the prize was a brass lie-nielsen block plane. Very nice!!

There is one major problem with the Lie-Nielsen planes. Once you have one you won't be happy with anything else. My L-N low angle block plane is the best made tool I have.

Paul...Can you describe the method you use when jointing the edges of tops and backs. Pictures would be cool. I'm thinking of purchasing one for that purpose. Which L-N plane are you using?...the #7 ($400) or #8 ($475)jointer or the low angle model($295)? What advantage and limitations does the low angle have over the higher angle?
