Hi everybody, My Dad and I were going through some wood in the garage and found a big box of old planes from my great great grandfather(the garage is a literal treasure trove). I was wondering if anyone out there could give me some help in learning about this plane? It measures 26" long and 3 1/2 wide. The E.D. Gillette is my great great grandfathers name, Ethelbert Gillette. He seems to have stamped everything many many times. If anyone can help me date this to closer than a couple years that would be great. If there are any stamps on the metal parts it will need to be cleaned before I could identify them, but if someone knew what to look for? Here are some photos: Thanks! Burton |

I have a bunch of these Stanley Planes. They are called transitional because they were a wood bottom. And a modern steel mechanism on the top. A good way to date the plane is patent dates. They were only put on the date until it ran out in 17 years. There may be several patents on it- figure from that. Most of this series were made from the late 1870's until the early 1940's. I have a book on the history of stanley planes but I can't seem to put my hands on. They aren't worth a great deal but it is worth cleaning and using. Would be a good jointer for jointing sides and tops. If I can find the book I will send a message to you. Old tools are great especially if they have family history as well. |

Thanks very much for the info guys. I am much more interested in this tool as family history and something to use rather than something of great value. I will check into these leads and hopefully learn something! Thanks a lot, Burton |
