This one blew right by me. During my membership here, there was chatter of UKES, then chatter again and I shrugged and went right by. Then, watching the post-concert jam of the Emmy Lou and Mark Knopfler Concert.(Knopfler to Dire Straits as Gilmore to Pink Floyd). Anyway, drummer, fiddle, Lap Steel, Knopfler looked kike he grabbed one of theose big Electric/Accustic? Gretch babys and the remaining members of the band grabbed UKES-Les Paul,+ Island type music-for me, sometimes they merge. So, sub rosa, UKES have crept there way into music everywhere!? Are there shots available |

Bob, It's not your fault but the fault of the OLF forum. Few people know that once you OLF status become KOA you are constantly bombarded by subliminal messages about ukuleles. I guess that makes sense because the best ukuleles seem to always be made of Koa. Soon, and before you realize it, you will suddenly have the urge to build a few ukuleles. The next step in this cycle is when you discover what a serious instrument the ukulele has become. That's also when it hits you that like guitars you can create an instrument that makes OK sound or you can make one that sounds amazing. I hope I haven't let the cat out of the bag. But now that I have made you aware you can take steps to protect yourself. I would suggest searching the forum for photos of Hesh in a Bikini. It was quite by accident that I saw this photo and I'm still not sure if I have recovered from the trauma. One thing that I know is that I only had to see it once and that it has stopped all the subliminal messages like wood acquisition (created by the sponsors) and others that are too terrible to mention. Best of luck Philip |

Ken, Your correct it was Hesh in a French Maids outfit. Argh, I guess the trauma blocked it out. It was his birthday photo. I better go because I'm getting weak just thinking about it. Philip |

I'm with you guys! Ukuleles are beautiful instruments, and no doubt, I’m going to build one too! Have you all ever heard this guy play the ukulele? Talk about talented, this guy has got it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puSkP3uym5k&search=ukulele |

Larry, a lot of ukes were built with mahogany too, as they are fairly similar woods. Now Black Acacia is an almost identical substitute for Koa in ukes. |

There was a guy playing a ukelele on our television a few days ago, that looked like a miniature steel national guitar. Is there such a thing as a resonator Uke? By the way first time I've seen a Uke on our television since the days of Tiny Tim and Tip-toe..... Colin |

I got a kick out of this video. They have a lot of others on youtube as well. Who would of thunk it, a uke orchestra! |

That's great! Except their vocals were a little suspect. You gotta love it. |

Yes, that's the one, I like the idea of a resonator uke. By the way the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain are credited with putting the uke back on the UK stage after about 50 years when they wouldn't have got past the stage door. We'd just about got over the dreadful George Formby in the 30s/40s, when along comes Tiny Tim and delivers the coup de grace to any hope the ukelele had of being accepted as a musical instrument over here. Though they still have to treat it very lightheartedly to be accepted. Now, things are changing, my local junior school (5-11 year olds) have adopted the ukelele as the starting instrument to play in class, having taken over from the recorder. Apparently a lot of schools are doing the same all over the country. I see a resurgence of the ukelele here, especially as the far east factories can turn them out for very low cost for the schools. I may have to build myself a little all mahogany one just for fun. Colin |

[/QUOTE] So they've finally come to their senses and stopped inflicting the misery stick on unsuspecting primary school students. |
