Wouldn't the edit button limit any user to limiting their own posts only? How would anybody edit antother members post?....and why would they want to for that matter? I'm curious about the European standard and what it may be, too. I've read a few posts about how we need to watch Europeans to learn the right way to do things and I find that amuzing. It fell to the effect of, "We would have been denied the best music ever had it not been for the Europeans." This standard for tone being most important is one of the discerning player regardless of geographic location. Pretty shiny guitars with terrible tone sell as much in Europe as they do anywhere else in the world. Regards, Kevin Gallagher/Omega Guitars |

Seeing kevins last remark, I will throw this one out there too ...the overwhelming majority of guitars sold each year sound like cardboard, at least to me they do - think of all the offshore factories cranking out budget guitars that sell for 179 bucks or less .. and they are being sold. So what difference would it make at all to ask someone if a guitar sounds good or not ... most couldnt tell the difference, because they can barely play, if at all. One of my students is on contract to Yamaha as a piano tuner - he was at the head office one day, and they said, come on, we need to go break some guitars. All the cheapy Yamahas that Costco sells that get returned .. all get smashed. They are not worth the time to repair. So they get them together, and literally jump on them, them toss them into a dumpster. He though it was a riot |

Tony, That ver same thing....smashing the guitars....happens at one of the largest and most revered guitar manufacturing facilites in the world with the exception of jumoing on them. They send them through a chipper a into a sealed dumpster. They are producing far more than those cheapy deals tht Yamahs sells through Costco, but repair costs still outweigh the cost of just sending a customer a new guitar wit the same serial number in it. I agree, too, that most people don;t know guitars well enough to tell the different between a horrible guitar and a great guitar. I know a guy who has been playing for 20 years and still plays a very poorly made and even worse sounding and playing Penco acoustic that he bought all of those 20 years ago for about $79.00. It sounds like its got a rag shoved in the soundhole, but he insists that he's never heard anything that sounds as good to him. More power to him....and he's saved himself thousands of dollars by not being bitten by the GAS bug, but he's not the guy to call to review guitars above the $100.00 price point. To most folks who play, tone is not the paramount issue, unfortuantely. More important to most are apearance and price....oh, and don't forget what their favorite artist played on their last tour. OK, OK, I really did not to intend to 'heat things up' with my comment. It seems to me, reading the posts from abroad-not only Europe, That the most important factor of ax building was, 'How does it sound'?; Not, 'is it a Martin XYZ D28, Gibson, Gretch, or other production guitars". My Mind boggles (much easier for me with 'hypo mania', Manic Depression) that Musicians, good, great, superstars would rather own and play a 'factory ax than a guitar made by a competent luthier. Remember, owning or playing great early Martins, Gibsons, are purely a function of the law of averages. Early Martins now heard with thoroughly dried addi. and Even fewer of these 'classics' have the Voices of Angles. These factories start with agreed bracing-size, wood, thickness, add tops as consistent as they can find (of course, the 'consistency is the inconstancy'. A few guitars, with woods, bracing, tops come together, (by the law of averages) to produce superior instruments. For this guitar, woods, bracing top wood and it's set thickness work perfectly. The kind of sound we search for, and find, for each guitar that leaves our shop. Random number: twenty top builders here can produce a guitar that is cosmetically equal to or superior the 'factory' and, they will all have a better, more consistent sound.--This is not to mention all the important tweaks that can and are done; multiple radii, tweaking bracing and thicknesses, neck width, contour, quality of materials-on and on. And all these built for equal to or less money. |
