does anybody have any experience making 3 piece laminated necks where the cedar used wasn't quartersawn? The cedar on these is more like a 45 degree angle where you cut it down the center and then flip it around and glue it up with a thin solid piece of maple or something else in the middle. The final neck blank looks similar to this: /////||\\\\\ Are the necks pretty stable this way? What do you all think of this type of neck? Cheers! John |

John That looks good to me. I did a 3 piece neck on a guitar/bouzouki I made last year. You can see a picture here http://www.house-guitars.com/image%20pages/Gazouki2.htm I bought a little info sheet from LMI I think it was, on making laminated necks. The info sheet said to put the pieces together just as you illustrated in your diagram. I don't think you will have to worry about strength. This will be very strong. I am just getting ready to try some 5 piece necks. I hope to get around to that on Saturday maybe. Josh |

Josh, that looks like what I'm talking about. Have you had pretty good luck with the neck remaining stable? I think I'm going to try one this way because the wood is so much cheaper, and if it stays strong, why not? For a beginner like me I'd much rather be paying $5 bucks a neck vs. $30. That's a nice looking guitar you made, is that purpleheart down the middle of the neck? Let me know how your 5 piece necks turn out. Cheers! John |

John That instrument went to a friend/my former guitar teacher. He lives about 5 min away so I get to see the instrument every once and a while. So far I have not heard any complaints. The neck is made of walnut with a strip of purpleheart down the center. Very solid. This instrument has 8 strings instead of six and seems to be holding up very well. It’s a good explanation of how to properly put together laminated necks. www.lmii.com/CartTwo/thirdproducts.asp?CategoryName=Plans%2C +Other&NameProdHeader=Neck+Layout+Chart A nice touch to your laminated necks is to put veneer strips between the lamination. I’ve seen it done on 3 piece mahogany necks and it looks great! It is much more affordable and is probably a good way to go if you are just getting started. I’ll try to post a picture of my attempt at a 5 piece neck when I get it done. I know that are a number of guys around here that use 5 piece necks all the time. Josh |
