Can anyone please explain to me how fret size affects playability, tone and anything else you can think of. I am faced with making a decision without any idea about size. Thanks, Cecil |

What are you building. An acoustic 6 string, 12 string, a classical, flamenco, mandolin or electric? What gauge stings do you plan on using? what type action do you intend to set up to. is for slide, finger style Travis picking of strumming. All these things go into deciding on what frets to use. In short you have to decide on width of fret, crown height, alloy, tang depth. You could even go straight bar, barb-less tang, or modern barbed tang As far as affect on tone my personal opinion is that the effect is so little I would worry much about that. Playability is more or less based on the set-up you design for. Action height and string gauge are the basic considerations here. with out all the info on the project it would be hard to tell you what fret to go with. but in general for acoustic guitars with medium light or custom light gauge strings (between .056-.011 strings) medium/medium size frets are a perfect fit in most cases |
