Don't know if you got my message through the private messenger, but I was asking about tear out using an x-brace notching jig similar to yours. I made the jig and I seem to be getting a lot of tear out and splintering. I tried backing the braces with scrap wood for the entrance and exit cuts and they seemed to help a lot, but I'm wondering if a spiral downcut bit instead of the 2 flute straight bit that I have would work better. Just curious. |

Hi Jeremiah, yes, you need to provide entrance and exit sacrifice strips. Works like a backup board when drilling a hole, keeps the hole cut nice, same with the router bit. I've been using a 5/16" single flute, but you may be right a spiral downcut bit may be preferred. Check your email, I responded to your address stored in my computer, not the private messenger. Matter of fact, to show how well it worked recently for me I put up two shots of the out-working, here they are again. Hey thanks for raising the file size up to 40KB, makes a big difference, yahoo! All Adi, can you tell? |

Thanks, Bruce. Nice to know I'm on the right track. I think the spiral downcut may make a cleaner cut, but I think the cut I'm getting, providing some support on the front and back, is satisfactory. |
