I am going to use the hanger bolt necck joint on my next guitar and had a few questions for those who have used this joint (or similar joints).

1)What size reinforcement dowel?-I am thinking 3/8" or 7/16"-hard maple

2)What size bolts? I am thinking 1/4-20.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Brad

Hanger bolts are what you see on wooden desks and banjos - course wood
thread on one end, machine thread on the other.

I don't know of any guitar builders who are currently using this hardware.
Most folks use a brass or steel threaded insert in the neck, and a furniture
bolt fastening the heel to the neck block. In that case, 1/4"-20 is a pretty
widely used standard.

I believe that both Collings and Mario use hanger bolts. Is that correct,
Mario?

Yes,the hanger bolt is used by Collings-with a dovetail shaped tenon and by Mario with a butt joint. Both use dowel reinforcements.

I noticed that the pre-made necks that Stew-Mac sells also uses this type.
I'm sure there are others out there using it.

You can buy them (the neck with hanger bolts) from Martin. I assume if they are selling them that way they must also be using them that way.
