I would like to be able to network my computers together somehow so that I can see what is on other computers in the house, and do file transfers. I haven't a clue where to begin! if someone could point me in the right direction, I'd be much obliged...

I have XP Home Edition on one computer, and XP Pro on my laptop. Not sure if any of that is pertinent info or not.

Thanks,

Don

Don-
Are both the computers connected together with a hub or router so they share the internet connection now, or do you need to think about cabling as well?

BTW- this may not be the least frustrating thing to do around the holiday season !

However, it's not that difficult to do, so you should be up and running pretty soon.

Merry Christmas

John

They are both connected to the wireless router, the PC is plugged in to it, and the laptop is wireless. I managed to run some sort of setup for a wireless home network on the laptop, and apparently I have to run the same setup program for the PC, using the info provided during the setup of the laptop. Does it sound like I'm heading in the right direction?

Thanks John...

Don-
You are almost there!

It sounds like you have made a good start.

You've probably checked out the info at the dark side already:
Microsoft Networking Info

and

If you are running 'Internet Security' software you will probably have to tell the software to 'trust' the computers on the network as well.

Cheers
John

John! I didn't even think to go look there...

That's good reading. I should be able to figure this stuff out lickety-split. Well, at least I should be able to during my week off.

Thanks again, and Happy Holidays!

Are you using the security features of your router?  You don't want to start sharing files if they will be accessible from the street in front of your house.

Absolutely. Password protected and everything. Thanks for asking though! There are actually a couple people near me who have wireless routers that I can access because they don't have passwords. Not a good thing...

Right.  You can also set your router so it does not transmit itself..  Then only your computers can see it.  Others will not even see a system in the area, if they aren't in the password loop.  Once you get all your folders you want to access from your laptop set for sharing, the whole  process is pretty easy.  The only other problem is if there is more than one person accessing files.  Then you could have a problem with current data.  If you are like me, though, I'm the only one accessing stuff.

Ooh...I didn't know I could make it invisible to others. I will have to try to do that. I'll be the only one using the network per se...my wife monopolizes the PC, so this is my way of getting to my files and such.

Thanks for the tip!

Don,

Here's a link.

And to look at the Windows machines from your Mac:

Don, if it`s not too late, make sure you change the workgroup name from MSHOME to a different one. I didn`t think about it when I networked mine and inadvertently networked into swmbr`s pc. In my case, this was not a good thing.

Pat, good idea... I use RD to get into my computer at the office to work from home frequently. My greatest interest though is bringing files back and forth from the "XP" side of my Mac and the PC. It would be really cool if I could access the files on my PC from work via RD on my Mac though. I have so much stored on the PC that I would love to have access to when not at home.

Coe....I'll make sure I do that! Thanks.
