I decided against my best judgment to use a high dollar set of Ziricote to try my first Venetian Cutaway. Hey! It worked! I thinned it to .090, wrapped it in foil, dribbled water from a wet rag on each side, then wiped the water around wetting the whole surface, put it in the bender set on high, when I heard the water sizzling, I bent the waist all the way, then the cutaway, then the lower bouts. The next day I zapped it again for 5 minutes with medium heat, let it cool and removed it.

Looks great Lance! I have a set of ziricote that I am just about ready to use. Can you be a little more specific about the temp setting you used, and the length of time you left it a full temp? That really is some beautiful wood, isn't it. |

Dave - I don't have a thermometer to measure the temp. I just load the side, and put the bending blanket on high, in less than 2 minutes the water is sizzling, and thats when I start the bend, it takes about 1 minutes to complete all 3 bents, the waist, cutaway and lower bout. then I crank the heat back to about 50% and cook for a few more minutes. Thats really it. |

Thanks Lance! I'm just trying to fine tune my process. I finally got around to installing a high capacity rheostat in series with my timer and am still trying to get everything down. Always curious how others are making it work. |

Looks great Lance. The side looks a little wide what are you making? hey that would be an awesome Acoustic Bass guitar! Ziricote...man...probably fly off the rack!

I may have just gotten lucky? But it bent like warm plastic. Steve from Colonial tells me this Zircote was cut in the 60's.. Its old like me!

Still working "without a net", eh, Lance! [;) That mold looks awfully familiar...didn't we do the 13th Fret OM in it? 
Nice bend on the ziricote. It's not as big a problem as many think, but do watch it for small cracks to open up now that it has had water/heat/bending applied to it. |

Hank yes - I am by golly! That is indeed the mold - until I trim the sides I can't fit it into the correct mold, but I wanted to get it in something, and your OM mold worked perfecly 
The other sides not been bent yet, and yes it has a long with the grain crack, I flooded it with ca. |

You may want to think about side cleats, if you don't already use them, in woods that want to "move" after bending. Also watch the areas around the neck block and tail block for cracks after the infusion of moisture from the glue in these relatively large contact areas. |

Lance, Nice! Way to go. Looks like you made the right decision to go with your instincts and bend the ziricote cutaway. How come my instincts don't work that way! 
What binding/purfling scheme are you going to use? Top wood? How about a picture of the back? A center seam? This is going to be a beautiful guitar. Jeff |

Thanks Jeff - Id like to do a Italian spruce top, I'm considering a nice set of flamed Redwood I got from Don Williams, but haven't committed to anything yet. The top purfling and back strip will be .063 green abalam, Snakewood bindings, the rosette will be .135 green abalam inlaid into a rosewood background, similar to this one Brock Poling did for the OLF guitar. 
Ebony Fretboard and bridge, and a 5 piece neck. By the way, side #2 the non cutaway bent like butter last night. So the nail biting is over - time to have fun
