Does any one know the degree of taper the martin bridge pin reamer they offer in there tools section is?

Heather from Gurian says there pins have a 5 degree taper - Stewmac says "The 3-degree reamer tapers from approximately .312" to .150", with 3" cutting length, and is suitable for many bridge pins from Gibson and Gurian."

I dont know what to buy for my stock of ebony pins from Gurian - Paul Woolson, what you using?

Lance, I've always been under the impression that Gurian uses 3? and martin uses 5?. Now I guess Heather is telling everyone that they use 5?. Not sure what to think anymore. I've got a 3? reamer that I use for my Gurian pins and a 5? that I use for martin stuff. They both seam to work well and the pins fit tight. Then again, if you were using the wrong reamer, I think the pins would seam to fit tight. In fact, if you drilled a straight hole, the pins would probably seam to fit tight. So not sure what to tell you except that I use 3? for Guiran and 5? for martin (everyone else). Hope that helps/confuses you completely. Paul

the best summary of bridge pin info i've found is here:

        http://www.customi nlay.com/Store/Ivory/sizechart/bridgepinsizes.html

he gives specs for the various bridgepin sizes and what instuments they fit.

he states thatthe martins pre '94, with the exception of the hd-28 are 3 degree and martins since 94, and the pre '94 hd-28 are 5 degree.

Thanks Paul. Michael -
Looks like contrary to Heathers comments - I need a 3 degree reamer - I have a 5 degree - and its making a much to wide hole at the top before the bottom seats -

thanks again -

I bought the Grizzly set (both tapers and a reamer) and do not like them
at all. Anyone want them? Make me an offer!

I also found the Grizzly reamers to be of poor quality. The cutting edges just would not cut and I had to return them for a refund. It must be the luck of the draw on those... sounds like John and others have received some good ones that work fine from Grizzly.

I have the Grizzly reamers and also the Martin Reamer. I use the Grizzly reamers and they work excellent. I like them becaues they cut very slowly and are not aggressive, unlike the Martin reamer. It's a lot easier to remove a bit of wood than to try to put it back

Sylvan,

I need a set to compliment my lovely hardware store reamer (not sure even what size it is) I'd be interested...

What don't you like about them?

Terry -
They are very cheaply made and do not cut well.

I actually used cut nails when I first started and ground the taper in I wanted. I put them into a variable speed drill and they worked very well. I guess if I did that today on a cutomers D45 I would have to call 911 LOL.
I can't complain about the Grizzly tools. I have had great luck and if I wan't happy they allways replaced them or refunded my money.
I agree that ones out of a machinist catalog would be much higher end as they are HSS or TI coated

I have a set of the Grizzly reamers and they seem to work fine for me. The price was right too....
