One of the tuners on my classical guitar is squeaking. This is the side that I did not do so good of a job drilling to accept the tuners. The high E never really fit well. I did "open" the hole up by sanding before installing the tuners. They fit better, but the E squeaks. I was thinking of putting some wax on the interior hole. Thanks, Doug Ubele |

is it sqeaking because it is too tight, or because it is not aligned truly and is turning off center? if the later it will wear your tuners prematurely. it is not unusual for them to squeak when new in the bore, but the wood tends to burnish with use and the squeak often goes away. a (very) little wax should help the noise problem which can be irritating. be careful of wax containing solvents. may affect finish and if your rollers are plastic they may react. if nylon. should be ok. perhaps pure bees wax or carnauba if you have it. |

After I drilled that sides holes, I put the tuners in to test the fit. The tuners did not want to go in all the way past 1/2". The problem looked to be the high E. I took some sandpaper wrapped around a dowel and widened the hole until the tuners seated. So, I guess the high E is probably turning off center? When I start my second, maybe I should invest in one of those jigs to drill the holes? |

did you drill free hand or on a drill press? if on the press did you ensure that the peg head edge was perpendicular to the bit on two axes? if the hole is not at the correct spacing, or not perpendicular to the mounting surface, the roller will bind, and even if you ease the hole the tuner will be under stress as the roller will not be supported properly on its axis of rotation. the jigs do make the work simpler, but are not required. with or without one, accurate work is. |

I did it on a drill press. I did the best I could by drilling perpendicular. Maybe my measurement was slightly off. The other side fits and works perfectly. I'll be even more careful next time. Thanks |

it sounds as though the hole was drilled slightly off interval, given that the others are all working well. did you centre punch to give the drill a start? it does help prevent the drill from wandering. i have found that when i do something resulting in the work not being as intended it is very important to find out why i went astray in order to prevent it happening again. if i don't find out the why of it i am very prone to repeating the error. |
