I ran into a problem on my 1st guitar today. As I was sanding at 1000 grit on the top my binding popped off. Not sure what this means. Perhaps the finish is a bit thin. I used the aerosol nitro from stew-mac and have been told it runs pretty thin. So do I need another 3 or 5 coats and can I just spray right on top of the reglued binding. The part that came up is right by the dovetail joint and is about 2 inches of it. The finish that is on the guitar has now sat for 1 month as directed by another luthier. Hello Will -- Welcome to the OLF - I didn’t find a picture of your binding mishap - but I think I understand what you’re saying. Your binding has delaminated from the binding ledge? There probably was not enough glue in that one small area, I suggest (if you can) carefully lift the binding and apply more glue, tape it down, and let dry, then you can level and reapply the lacquer. You can if you like; tape the binding down first and wick a drop or two of ca into the seam, either way, there is going to be a little repair work to be done on the effected area. Good Luck. |

Will I be hurting anything if I spray on a few more coats over the whole thing once it is glued? I hadn't finished sanding yet and had not even sanded the sides yet. will |

"Will I be hurting anything if I spray on a few more coats over the whole thing once it is glued? " No! Not at all! As a matter of fact, that’s what you will have to do to make it an invisible fix. You WILL want to wait a bit and let the glue dry. If you use CA let it dry at least a coupla days, if your using plastic bindings and I think you are, and you use some sort of solvent glue, such as DUCO, you'll want to give it maybe a week to gas off. |

I used model cement for the plastic binding and the CA I recall refers to basically superglue or cryanoacrylate. Am I right on the CA? I can use that and give it the 2 days if that stuff will blend OK with the finish and fill in any cracks. will |

Yes the CA will work fine - I ONLY use ca for my bindings, ill tape them tight then wick in the CA. Then if there is any gaps, Ill mix CA with wood dust and fill. You should be fine, Just dont over do it, be very carfull when wicking in the ca- try to keep it clean and just in the area you need. That way your (repair) area is kept small. |

note that if you have not sealed the binding ledge with shellac or something else the ca may slightly discolor the adjacent spruce. you may be better off to take your time and use the same glue for the repair as was used originally. the nitro will melt in. if there are any chips missing it may be necessary to drop fill the chipouts and level before cover spraying. just spray some of your aerosole into a small container and use a toothpick to drop some into the chipouts. |
