I bought a circle cutter from Lee Valley tools. This is the kind you use with a drill press. I was wondering if this is too aggressive for cedar/spruce tops for making holes and cutting a rosette channel. I was thinking of returning it and buying the stew-mac set up for hole cutting and rosette channeling. Thanks, Doug Ubele |

I looked at that cutter, but past on it because the cutter is skewed and it doesn't appear to leave a flat bottomed channel. I guess this can be modified though. There is a current thread on MIMF about this. |

I have purchased that as well. It is a good tool for cutting circles. I have used it to cut circular pieces of hardwood to make a rosette, and to cut the soundhole hole in spruce and redwood just fine. Personally I prefer a router, with a downcut bit and a circle jig for cutting the rosette channel, because that cleans everything out for you real well, with the Lee Valley circle cutter you will have to clean the channel out with chisels. |

Did you guys see Grizzly is coming out with a new circle cutter available in July 05? It looks like you can attach your routers and trimmers to it and it's only $19.95. It comes with the brass indexing pin and looks pretty sturdy. Cheers! John |

Doug, if you have the option of a router base of some sort, I think you'll be much more happy. I think you'll always get a cleaner cut with a router. I posted a pic of one of the circle cutters I use at http://www.mimf.com/cgi-bin/WebX?50@88.GZivaqcIojR^1@.ee87e3 2/18 |
