this tale of woe from spain caught my eye on another forum and thought to share: "Hi, all folks. This is a sad story... &nbs p; Well, I?ll start to tell you. This last weekend I started to move all my working furniture, my tools, my wood and all the items I?ve collected in the last three years for woodworking and building guitars from my old room to my new handbuild woodshop (12'x3'). The machines already were moved the before weekend. So I put all the wood aside in piles for "families of wood". So I had my cherrie, my IPE, my sapelle,... and my 8 tops of spruce (5 master grade curly spruce, 2 master grade regular sitka, and 1 master sitka-englemann hybrid white bearclaw top). At this time I got some pieces of furniture and started the moving. Me and my wife were working hard to get all thinks ordered in its final placement, the children were playing around... Wait, have I said the "children"? YES!!!!! THE CHILDREN. I didn?t notice until the end of the day when I begun to order all the guitar woods in its place. I was looking for the spruce in the old room, in the rubbish, below almost everything that could hide the spruce pile, but I had no exit. At that moment, I walked to the other side of the house, to the garden, and then I saw the most horrible sight in my life: my 3 year old daughter and my 3 year old nephew were making a fire in the ground, and beside them the last split pieces of "beautiful and loved" spruce tops, the ones they used for the fire. I sat down, and lost my voice to say anything, and almost get a heart atack. I was wondering how it could happen, why happened to me, why not happened with other wood... But the spruce didn?t come back to life again. So the effort of the last year gathering spruce in small quantities from Mario, has been useless. Now I?ll have to wait to get some money to start again to buy some" its surely enough to make a grown man cry. can't take your eyes off the ankle biting rugrats for a minute. |

Not trying to be harsh, but three-year-olds with a fire? He's lucky that a few tops were all that he lost. Still, it's got to hurt to lose all of that good wood. |

i wondered about the fire issue as well, whether real etc, and how they learned to split wood for one at such an early age? perhaps using a second language caused some lack of clarity... |

lance's idea goes a long way to explaining why so many like coming here. but further to this story, today i noticed this post from the owner of the site and vendor of the wood lost to the fire: "you know the rule screw up the spruce I replace it for free you cover shipping What did you loose sizes and what type email me at dacosta@sprucetonewood.com I hope it wasn't 70203 #2 very very limited mario" he is the vendor about whom i posted a question a week or so ago. if his promise is kept it gives gives a different perspective about how he conducts his business! so it would appear that all will be well. the story was posted on www.luthierforum.com, title was spruce disaster. |
