What type of thermometer is used when using bending blankets? And how/where is it placed? |

Hi Tom, You should check out John Mayes DVD on sidebending, he shows you how to use a thermometer when bending. I think he said he got it at off-the-wal-mart. If I remember right, he placed in under the top blanket at the waist. But he uses 2 blankets and 2 SS metal slats to make a sandwich. I'll let him comment on this. Hope this helps a little. Tracy |

I used the walmart bought digital meat thermometer, but I really like the little spot thermometer stewmac sells. I just set it on top of the slat while preheating, and then after the side goes in, I allow it to heat back up to temp. (usually about 300F) and then just shut off the blanket. That process has been working good for me. They both read really close by the way, I just did not like the way the digital left a little crease in the slats when I jammed it in there. The probe is a little wider then the sides so... |

John...Do you see any differences in readings from one to the other? With light bulbs I use the StewMac surface pyrometer and like it. However, I just purchased John Hall's blanket and feel that the probe might be more accurate in gauging the wood's actual temperature so I'd be interested in knowing your comparative results. |

I didn't do anything really scientific. I just remember they were pretty close. |

Thanks for the info. I will probably go with the Walmart Meat Thermometer for now. Seems like the least expensive. |
