I find it interesting when looking at the specs on the Martin website for a guitar such as the HD 28 that they give the string spacing at the nut as 1 11/16, at the 12th as 2 1/8 and the saddle as 2 1/8. I may be missing something, but how can it be the same at both the 12th fret and the saddle. It should be somewhere in between, like 1/2 of the difference....1 31/32. Just wondering? I am sure learning a lot reading all you folks have to share. I'm building my second now, a 000 14 fret walnut/western red cedar top, and continue to introduce what I am learning here into my building techniques. Tom |

Tom...It's the NECK width at the nut & 12th, and the STRING spacing at the saddle. I know, the terminology can be confusing. Carlton |

Most of the big boys do it this way. As Carlton said, you are measuring the width of the nut and the width of the fretboard at the 12th. You are however measuring the string spacing at the bridge. It's just to confuse everyone. |
