What kind of abalone and what size would you like to see on the charity
guitar? My vote is for .098 Red Heart as I think the reddish color would
blend nicely with the bloodwood bindings Bob C is donating. But you
decide what you want! If your don't see what you like be sure to write it
in including color and size.

Please lets all be fair. Don't pull a Don :P. One vote per person .

What are the wood choices? Trim choices?

I guess that is up for discussion as well. This is just taking care of the
pearl. Whoever is putting in the rosette can have some input here as to
what woods/purfling will go with it. I would just put some maple and
ebony lines around the abalone and call it good. I like simple...

Well since you are soliciting suggestions... here is the whole thing... I generally think in terms of the entire guitar rather than specifically one part or another.

I think would look (and sound) nice:

Adi top
EIR b/s
EIR bindings
w/b/w micro line side purfs
w/b/w micro line back purf
b/w/b micro line top purfs
.125" red heart ab with b/w/b micro line purfs on the edges.
Make the tail wedge out of EIR and cut & glue it into a chevron pattern.

Neck
H. Mahog
rosewood veneer
maple veneer
1/8" strip of walnut or rosewood
maple veneer
rosewood veneer
H. mahogany

Fingerboard / Bridge / Headplate

High figured Madagascar Rosewood

GRRRrrrrrrrrr.......

Don

p.s.... Michael P's suggestion sounds great too.
Red heart or paua blue select are both nice, and might look great. I lean toward the wide red heart. I'll just have to vote a few times to make it happen.
All joking aside, we really should look at this as a whole package and decide what would look good together. Michael Payne and Brock both had the right idea...plan the guitar from a "holistic" approach, so-to-speak.Don Williams38541.614849537

Don and Brock are right the binding, general purfling and rosette scheme should be designed as a whole. I believe that Bob is donating Blood-wood for the binding, so know top specs are:

Sitka
Blood-wood binding
B-W-B purfling ? not sure this is set but suits my taste

Good options on the rosette

3 ring: BWB    BWB-choice of abalone-BWB    BWB

1 ring multi-inlay: BWB-IRW-BWB-choice of Abalone-BWB-IRW-BWB

1 ring pie sectioned multi-inlay: BWB-IRW-BWB-choice of Abalone-BWB-IRW-BWB

I think the general top design is the real question at this time.

who is doing the rosette? How bout we all decide what kind of abalone
and what size and leave the rest up to the genius of the guy doing it. I
trust whoever! If we take a poll on every single minute detail we will
never even get started! So who is doing the rosette and what do YOU
think we should do.

Fabrication by committee.

the only way to build.

It insures you can't make a mistake.

Because you don’t make a decision

I voted for the .098 red heart abalone. Might I humbly suggest a purfling around it of burgundy/white/black...the burgundy against the red ab really enhances the shell color.   I use this combo all the time and it is very pleasing. If need be, I can supply the 3 piece purfling to whomever is going to inlay the rosette.

Hank, that sounds beautiful! Where can such purflings be had?

I have GOBS of red heart ab to use!

according to depauls page he has 3/32nds curved strips in red heart for
$20 per rosette. 3/32nds = .09375 Close enough!

I get it from Gurian. He makes it up when I do my semi annual large order. It's .010/.010/.020 white/black/burgundy. I'll pm you a larger file close up so as not to fill up the forum.
I double it up for body purfling and add a white/black laminate of same dimensions to make the concentric rosette rings.

Ok so it seems that the red heart won out.

I agree with hank and Lance that the Burgundy purfling would look sweet.
I say we just go with a simple Rosette and do the purfling and abalone.

Dave Rector can go ahead and get the abalone to MP.

Project is moving right along.... More updates soon.

All I need is a shipping address for Michael and I'll give Andy a call and get the rosette on the way.

Michael, you can just PM me with your address.

This is gonna be a fun project, and it looks like we are off to a smooth start.

Michael, I just got off the phone with Andy. You can start looking in your mailbox in a day or two. He said he would ship the red heart ab out this afternoon.

He was even kind enough to knock off 20% when I told him what was going to be done with it. Very nice guy to do business with.

Do you want to use the burgundy/white/black purfling on the red abalone rosette? Never saw a difinitive Yeah or Nay. If so, PM me an address to send some of the strips. Also, if this is how we go, will the same purfling be used for the top edge? If so, who's going to do the binding? I'll send some there, too. HankMauel38545.4247569444
