Here's a set of black walnut I sold to a player who sent it to his builder. It's a 10 string. Just a coat of sealer on it. Thought you guys might want to see it.

I'm sure Bob will correct me if i get this wrong.

It looks like American Black to me, I have seen the same pattern occure in european walnut, Claro tends to be a little more irregular in its grain and the grain tends to be wider, it was bred to grow faster and yield a greater walnut crop.

Walnut is usually very stable when seasoned properly, I have known it to become unstable (especially) Claro, when it is dried too fast. It is a joy to work with, but don't over wet it when bending as especially the figured stuff can be prone to twisting if too wet.

I have heard people complain that the sound is a little "muddy", I use it almost exclusively with European Spruce or Western Red Cedar, and the results is excellant.

While we are on the subject of Walnut thought you might like to see these, I have two sets that I managed to wrestle away from the gunstock guys (over here the most figured walnut usually goes for gunstocks as they pay the most) this board was too narrow for them so I managed to get it at a price that meant I didn't have to sell my house

My customers brief was european walnut and something a bit special.
