I'm looking into buying a gram scale. The Ohaus triple beam balance scales are able to weigh up to 610 grams but you can buy an additional mass set that allows it to weigh up to 2610 grams. For lutherie purposes is the mass set needed?

Also some models come with tare. Is this needed?

610 is fine. For example complete tops will weigh in under 300 grams.
Tare can be handy if your not setting on al level surface, you can re zero the scale with it.Jim_W38569.4489351852

Not insinuating anything here. Yet one might ask how do I know this? Well much like my attorney friend (Rick Lee), and fellow luthier, from Bradenton ( who I met at ASIA), I too have had DD's for clients now and again.

I think all that's needed for luthiery is a standard, relatively cheap digital gram scale. I believe the Tare function allows you to use a container or what ever and re-set the scale to zero so that you don't have to manualy compute actual weight. But like other things my memory of this function may be twisted and not deamed reliable. Dave-SKG38569.6786458333

one can get digital scales measuring to 0.1gm on the ent for about $45, with the tare function..

I'm supposed to be checking on a group buy but have been majorly distracted with my day job. I'll contact the seller this weekend and hopefully have something to post by Monday. I will check with a couple of dealers but I know one of them isn't Ohaus brand. The digital scales are good for weighing out hide glue but don't have the accuracy for soundboards, unless 3% variation is acceptable to you.
