I will do anything I can to support the campaign to FREE MAYES. I didn't realise that Ukuleles where consindered contraband and it is time this law changed! I heard a guy playing jazz on a uke last week on my serius accostic channel. I didn`t know you could do things like that on one! I`d enjoy some of this stuff but I don`t know where to look for it. Anybody? |

no that is a kamaka. It is a production shop in hawaii. They make pretty nice ones. The on he is playing is a custom. Of course the old story here is true..he could make a tin can and fishing line sound that good... |

Not only amazed, now I'm going to have to build one! Wow, this guy is good. I'm betting he was trained in classical guitar somewhere along the way. Tiny Tim kind of ruined the ukelele for my generation.

I don't think there is a single builder of Ukes in the UK, I may be wrong but I've never seen or heard of one. I don't know of anyone playing the Uke either, Tiny Tim did for it here as well, although there never has really been a tradition of Uke playing here ( I don't suppose there are many Northumbrian pipers in the US). In the 30's & 40's George Formby made the Ukelele banjo popular with his films and his fan club members still play them. But in nearly 40 years of folk clubs and festivals not one Ukelele seen! Are we missing something? Colin |

there is a ukulele maker in the UK. His name is Pete Howlett. Makes really nice stuff. You can google him and see some stuff. |

Thanks John, I'll go have a look. By the way the last time I heard one on a British recording was on the folk group Steeleye Span's version of the old sea shanty 'New York Girls', recorded in, I think, about 1975. The player of the Uke was a guest, none other than the Peter Sellers, the comedian/actor. Colin |
