has anyone made or used a pin router for inlays. I am looking for something
that can follow a template to get a perfect route. I would like to use a
positive mold made from the inlay. NOT a reverse mold

Bruce, how'd you build your "Hoffman"? I have some Friendly Plastic, and can make a reverse template out of that, but the rest I've no idea over...I'm getting quicker at cutting my logo cavities but would like the consistency of the template...

Precision Pearl Inlays did some three years ago for me. You have to buy fifty. He furnishes a reverse cavity in phenolic, which you attach to the back of a headstock with two sided tape.

Then you make a small pin router out of a fifty year old Dremel Drill Press. Charlie told me I'd never find one, he was almost right, I found two. Ebay.

You attach a wooden base to the riser, drill and super glue in a 1/32" pin, and you are ready to go to work. Does a great job.

So, check Charlies' site and you'll see it. works great. PS forget about the new dremel drill presses they are not going to work. The old ones are a machined fit between shaft and bronze bushing, honed to close tolerances in the low thousandths. That's why the inlays fit so well.

Matter of fact, the grease on one of the presses had gelled and was stuck. A little wdfourty and we were in business. Either of mine had little use so they can be old and still in great shape.

Okay there are two you do not want. One available at Lowes or Home Depot today, junk, for inlay that is. Here is the picture of one that looks like the one above, but it's sloppy and won't work. Do not buy one of these.

Of course you have to add a wood base to insert the pin in permanently, then it's a pin router.
